I have been kissed! / Thursday, May 25, 2006 @ 12:06 AM
Ooo the tittle must have gotten you guys excited right? Haha. Today for the first time in years, I was kissed! By a boy! Let me tell the story from the start.

I was in my way to work when I saw that the little shop at the bus interchange was selling my favourite prawn crakers. So I decided to get that, thats what I do, get some junk food to share with my wonderful colleagues at work so we can grow fat together. So I was happily walking to work, awaiting the time when I can just rip open the packet of crackers and fill up my empty stomach. I usually dont have time for breakfast, and I am too lazy to eat breakfast when I am on afternoon shift.

When I reached the centre, I was greeted happily by Yong Huat, a 9 year of old boy. He greeted me, "Good Morning Cikgu." 'Cikgu' means teacher in malay. This is weird because he is a chinese boy and no one really calls me 'Cikgu' at the centre. They usually call me by name or just 'teacher' which is fine with me.

What is so special about Yong Huat is that he is autistic but he is my favorite student. For those of you who do not know what autism or being autistic means, you can go
here. He doesnt understand when someone talks to him in long sentences or give long instructions. He also has short attention span and gets hyper when he eats too much sweets. However, he has a really pleasant face and he is very well liked.

Anyway as I was famished, I open the packet of crackers, when into the activity room where Kak Nor was marking papers, to share the crackers. I was not going to finish the crackers all by myself, its a huge packet! He saw me with the prawn crakers and while pointing at the packet he exclaimed, "I want!" When he wants something, he wants it. It will take some time to persuade him not to have it.

He actually followed me into the room and kept staring at the packet of crackers. Come on, anyone seeing him will feel a slight sympathy for him. He is after all special and it is just a lousy cracker. So I turned him to me and asked,

"Do you really want this?"
"Yea." He answered. His answers are usually short like this.
"If you want this, you have to kiss me first"

Without any hesitation, he leaned towards me and kissed me! Right on the cheek! I was shocked as I had this same conversation with him before and he refused to kiss me no matter what I offered him. Haha..so cuteeee..

Eventually I gave him the cracker, but I limited him to only one as he might be having cough after that. Just a little explanation and he understood that more crackers would be bad for him. Of course his facial expression changed for a while but he was ok after that. What was more bizarre was that he was rejected by 3 centres before because they could not handle him. His aunties at home also kept complaining that he is so naughty and difficult to control. He seems fine at my centre, very pleasant and fun to be with. This is a picture of him.

This whole experience has help me to come up with these theories:

1. If you respect the child, she/he will respect you back.
2. Children behave the way you expect them to behave so expect the best behaviour.
3. If you treat children with a love, they will treat you with love too.

Reading back, the theories can be applied to adults as well.

I am sure to miss him when I leave this job next month. *sobs*
