You can call me Noi! This blog consists of my thoughts. I am just a simple person with BIG dreams! Like the charcoal, hot pressure and extreme heat must be present in order to create a Diamond. I am in the exact same process.

Verses of love

Ayat Ayat Cinta

As you know, I very seldom write movie reviews because:

1. I rarely get to watch movies.

2. The movies I watched are all already outdated.

3. Most movies lack the educational lesson that viewers can take away.

Nevertheless, I had the opportunity to watch this heavily promoted movie. It is almost everywhere, the papers, tv, my friends blogs, everywhere. I was reading the synopsis in the malay news paper last week and I thought, hmm good, finally an Islamic love story movie. However, I think I did not fully understand the article as it was 100% in malay (duh) and I was struggling to understand the meaning behind each sentence. I now know how my dyslexic students feel when they do their comprehension!

Thus, I was not impress. I am not the biggest fan of love stories, most are really fake and too far fetched to be even believeable. Plus, most too, has got all the crying, the dramatic gestures and ridiculous circumstances that will eventually lead to a happy ending.

This was different. Let me tell you how it all began. It was my dad who wanted to watch it. I was not interested at all. And since he wanted to go, my logic was, if I were to go, it will be free of charge. That is a very rare thing, coming from my dad ok. We seldom get free things, treat from him. So I thought, what the heck, I will just go and enjoy the air con.

We caught the 10pm movie and on our way in, we bumped into Nurul's mum, who was just coming out from the same movie! She said that the book version 'Verses of love' is much better and since I have never read a malay novel in my entire life, I would not know.

So I was there sitting down and as the movie went on, I was waiting for the opportunity to cry out "lame". But that moment never came, I was amazed by the simple yet impressive storyline. I also caught myself falling in love with the main character, Fahri, not because of his physical outlook, but because of the character's intergity and principles that he held onto throughout the movie. Of course it was just a character that any muslimah watching it, will hope to one day find someone like that. It is rare in this time, in this place, but not extinct.....yet. He also resembles a friend I had in poly, equally skinny and equally hopeless interpreting signs from girls.

I was also mesmerized by the beauty the character, Aisha and her hypnotizing eyes. Imagine acting only using your eyes to express yourself, with the veil covering half the face, it must be really difficult. She was also stylish, even when wearing a veil and it was easy for anyone to captivated by her beautiful eyes--even ladies.

I was also full of admiration for the character Maria, who was a Christian but also present in her, was a muslimah waiting to emerge. The openess of Maria, and the respect she had for Fahri should be how we take living with multi religion society such as in Singapore. One cannot help but feel for her one sided love, but one cannot help but also wonder why is it the guy (Fahri) do not know that girls and dropping major signs? Gosh, I hope not ALL guys are like this.

Still, I was suprised at myself for tearing at only 2 parts of the movie. First was when Aisha and Fahri got married. It was a beautiful reunion, too beautiful with slips of messages about soulmates trailing before and after the wedding ceremony. Second, was at the last part of the movie when Aisha and Fahri held hands at the dessert with the final message about soulmates was carved into the minds of viewers like me. I was so incredibly touched with the jail scene when Fahri was trying to pray but was unable to concentrate. His 'jailmate' , whom he thought was crazy, gave him the words of God that Fahri needed to hear. It is my perception that the 'jailmate' was an angel ('malaikat') in disguise. It is sometimes so easy to blame and ask God why bad things happen to us. It is even amazing when we forgot God in good times. This, I thought, carries with it a strong message about how muslims in general should live their life.

The Islamic love story potrayed in the movie is so impactful to me, as the longer I sat in the theatre, the more I understand why I was there, even when I did not want to be there in the first place. There was a message within this movie, just for me and now, even more, I realise that God has been with me during the bad times as well. And it is during these times, I feel more of His presence.

You can read more about this movie at the official website. The songs accompanying the movie too, are equally beautiful and meaningful.

This is great movie to watch, even more for non muslims, for it shows the real Islamic way of life that should be a common sight, but not. I hold on to the hope that you too, will get the message that is intended just for you when you watch this movie.
