The X Men in us. / Sunday, May 28, 2006 @ 12:12 AM
You Are Jean Grey | Although your fate is often unknown, you always seem to survive (even after death). Your mind is your greatest weapon, literally!
Powers: telepathy and telekinesis, the ability to project thoughts into the mind of others, communication with animals

Beware! Spoilers ahead!
I am so excited to be catching X Men: The Last Stand on the first day it was ope n on Thursday. Yay! Although I end work pretty late, my brother and me caught the last show of the day at Toa Payoh, our old neighbourhood. We have been X Men loyal fans since we were very young. I remember waking up early on Saturday mornings just to watch the X Men cartoon on tv. Sometimes, we even record it and watch it again and again. It drived our mom nuts. Haha. Of course sometimes we would pretend to be the characters. My brother has always called himself 'Iceman'. He seem to like the ice power so much, even till today, I think he still secretly thinks he is Iceman. Haha.
For myself, I like Jean Grey. The power to move something with your mind is so cool to me even till now. I did try to move things with my mind when I was a child. After no result, I decided to stop before someone send me to the mental hospital for help.
Anywa y, this movie was a long awaited one! I loved the second X Men movie and couldnt wait to catch this one. First scene showed a young boy with scissors, knife, gauze in the bathroom trying to do something. This young boy looked really stressed when his father kept knocking on the door, worried that this boy might do something foolish. He was actually trying to cut away his wings, growing on his back. Its a gross scene, theres blood and all. This boy is Angel, the new member of the X Men team in this movie.
The second scene of the movie showed the first time Prof X and Magneto met Jean Grey. She was just a little girl. Prof X already sensed that there is a lot of power in Jean that he needs to help her with. For those who caught X2, you will remember Jean sacrificing herself for the rest of the good mutants in the plane that was having problem taking off.
In this movie, the main story the struggle among mutants when it was annouce d that there thanks to technology, there is a cure. This cure, when taken by mutants, will result in the mutant converting into a normal human being. While some of the mutants are glad that there is finally a chance for them to fit in, the rest of the more powerful mutants are offended by the very idea. Rogue, for one, was eager to get the cure as she is not able to do the normal 'what couples do' with her boyfriend Bobby Drake aka Iceman. She is incapable of human contact without killing them. For the others, they are outraged that the government is calling it a 'cure' since being a mutant is not a disease.
What was annoying in this film was how Scott aka Cyclops looks like a complete mess. He is not able to get into terms regarding Jean's death and its almost rare to see Cyclops, one of Prof X strongest frontline behaving like a total idiot.
Suprise suprise. Jean comes back to life looking normal and not the least bit wet. It seems weir d that someone who has been under water for so many days (not sure how long, but I get wet the first second I am in water) can seem so beautiful and perfect, not even wrinkly skin. However, that is not Jean anymore, that is another part of Jean, the supressed part of her, who is finally emerging. This personality of Jean is called Phoenix. She is onto the dark side, more powerful than any other mutant in the film.
Wolverine returns as the hero of the film again. It seems to weird to me that h aving the power of self healing and knives in hands is enough to save the day. The exciting part of the show reveals the X Men consisting of Wolverine, Storm, Iceman, Shadowcat Beast and Colossus fighting against the Brotherhood team lead by Magneto. Some of my favourite villians are Mystique, Multiple Man and the hot Pyro. We first see Pyro (John Allerdyce) in X2, where he was having disagreements with Bobby Drake (Iceman). I mean to say Pyro is hot, not because he has fire power that can destroy anyone, but hot because he carries this bad boy image that all girls love. He is Magneto's right hand man and follows him everywhere he goes.
It was nice to see Beast finally emerging in this film. He is one of the main and early characters of the X Men team and I am suprise that he didnt appear in X2. Another interesting character here is also Shadowcat, a girl with the power to walk through walls. Being one of the younger X Men fighting against the Brotherhood, viewers can almost feel the lost and sadness when she lost her mentor and teacher.
What was dis spointing in this movie was the absence of Nightcrawler from X2. It is such a waste not to have him! Also, I was expecting more lines from Angel, the new X Men in the team. His interactions with the rest of the X Men is minimal and I think his lines were not more than 5. What was that all about?! And he is in the poster of the movie? I wonder why Iceman and Shadowcat are not on the poster? It seems so unfair.
I was also dismayed that so many of the main characters of X Men died. Apart from that, some of the villians from Brotherhood, were converted to being human after they were shot with the 'cure'. I mean, where do we go from here? Everyone becomes normal? How boring!
X Men die hard fans will be slightly dissapointed with the ending. The real storyline of the X Men consist of a lot more twist and turns, and a lot more new characters that are constanly being evolved. Overall its got some great special effects especially the one where the Golden Gate Bridge is flown to the prison island by Magneto.
How this show relates to real life is how the majority of the people despise and look down on people who are different from themselves. No matter what, the diversity in the human race will always be in existence and uniformity will not work like it did in school. Watching the show, was like watching the world in the 3rd person position. It is easy to pinpoint others unfairness in treatment of others but when presented by the same situation, we would be like what we think we are not.
Therefore what this show teaches us is to not only accept differences in people but also to find that x factor in you and amplifies it to your advantage. Everyone has some kind of power, whether they are are aware or not. For those who already aware of what their power is, they can choose to do good with it, or use it for their own personal gain. Either way, it will still work fine, one better than the other of course.
So even of you cant move things with your mind literally, you can still move yourself to do the things you want for you with your life. The mind is more powerful than you think and dont ever underestimate its power.
