You can call me Noi! This blog consists of my thoughts. I am just a simple person with BIG dreams! Like the charcoal, hot pressure and extreme heat must be present in order to create a Diamond. I am in the exact same process.

Fables, the modern way. / Tuesday, July 04, 2006 @ 11:10 PM
Since it was Youth Day yesterday and it was a school holiday aka means I dont have to go to work, I had the opportunity to go to my old workplace. Actually my main purpose in going there was to settle the mc thingys thats driving my ex-boss mad and to see my favourite student whom I havent seen in more than a month! Guess what? He didnt come! I just saw him in my dreams a couple of nights ago. This is what happen when you miss someone so much! I cant believe he didnt come the day I was there. I was so looking forward to seeing him. Sob sob.

Anyway it was sooo wonderful seeing all the students there again! Of course I miss them, I have taught some of them for years! Jun, one of the skinniest student there was so sweet when he gave me a drawing of his. He even write there to me from Jun. Aww..I was so touched. I miss my lovely sisters dearly. I have no one to laugh loudly with me now. Mami cooked the delicous chicken rice..my favourite! I will be there when they perform in front of thousands of people during Racial Harmony Day later this month. Its so exciting, even when I am not part of the process preparation.

Today was in interesting day for me. In fact, everyday is different. I meet new people, talked to different students, different encounters, different things to laugh at. Today I sat in during the second language lesson. Today was the first time I was in that class as I swapped classes with Vivian from next door. Although some of the students knew me from English lesson, most didnt.

We were on the topic of 'teladan' which means what we lesson we can learn from something such as a story or and incident. The students were in 2 groups and I was sitting in one of the groups. They were asked to write down 3 fables that the know onto a piece of blank paper. Do remember that these 15 and 16 year old are special and most of them are either intellectually disabled or having mild retardation. Most look extremely normal, some even really good looking. So what happen was this boy, after discusion with his team mates finally decided these 3 fables:

-3 monkeys
-Humpty Dumpty
-Jack and Jill

As I was there not to spoon feed them but to assist in the discussion, I cant help but notice the '3 monkeys' written there. If there was such story, I must have not heard of it. They will be asked to bring out the lesson we can learn from such stories, at the same time, giving a brief summary of what the whole story is all about.

This should be interesting.

Monkey

The first boy explaining the '3 monkeys' story went like this:

Once there were 3 monkeys, jumping onto the bed. Then one of them fell and injured itself. The mother called the doctor and when the doctor came he said to the monkeys, "Dont jump on the bed."

That was it. As soon as the he finished the story, the other teacher and me stared at each other in disbelief before bursting out into laughter! I know it seemed pretty mean when a teacher laugh at a student but this story is so made up! And this boy insisted he read this somewhere!LOL.

The next boy was asked why we chose the Jack and Jill story. He then explained that he thought Jack was a genius. So the teacher, like me, was curious on why he thought Jack was a genius.

This was exactly what he said. I remembered it so well because I was sitting in front of him when he said it and I was also the first one to start laughing. Guilty as charged."He is genius because he planted the seeds and the seeds grew into a big tree."

For goodness sake! Thats Jack and the Beanstalk! I was laughing so hard, there were tears. I do try my best not to laugh but sometimes it just happen and I couldnt stop myself. These kids are great, they have not been rude to me at all, to my suprise. I expected teenagers to be cranky and defiant and I am pleasantly suprised. Some of the bigger boys seem shy with me I have no idea why. I will miss them when I leave this school, even though I only spend 2 weeks with them.

Thank you. My life is colourful with your presence.
