Inspiring Movie

So I have watched many movies about teachers that were inspiring, but never quite like The Ron Clark Story.

I saw this movie accidently at a hotel in KL about a year ago, I was so hooked by the story that I stayed in my hotel room just so I could watch it. In a nutshell, this story is about a teacher who got the worst class in a one of the worst schools. Through his unique teaching ways, he was able to turn around the lives of the children in his class.

This is actually a true story. You can read the article here. Even though I am a huge fan of Matthew Perry, the storyline and natural flow of the story moved me so much that I caught myself laughing, crying and sometimes doing both at the same time.

In this article, Ron Clark himself said:
'These kids might become good test takers but they won't become lifelong learners,' he says. 'Because of the system, teachers become burnt out and put kids in categories and if you tell kids they can't learn, they won't learn.'

How true. I was talking to some teachers about my request for some of my students to be placed in the same class for easy timetabling, somehow I sense the 'the kids are useless' feeling from them. Some teachers even remarked that there is nothing I (me the passionate about learning SNO) can do because the students simply cannot learn. Well, it looks like all those years of experience in teaching aint teaching these teachers enough. For a fact, there is not such thing as a student who cannot learn. Its just the wrong kind of mindset and mentality that the teacher and student have chosen to adopt.

And who says the student who got the top marks will be the successful one? Just because students score badly at tests does not mean that they are stupid or they cannot learn. I am one such student. I scored terribly at tests and exams but am I am lesser person that the others who get full marks? No.

I know for a fact that I have to study twice or even thrice as hard as other students because I dont have an excellent memory and I take a longer time to understand concepts especially like those in math. So if you think I am where I am today because I am smart, you are mistaken. Apparently after taking the multiple intelligences test, I am so linguistic and extremely low in logical / mathematical intelligences! No wonder I always have problems with math!

This week is a hectic week for me but guess what I am most excited about??!!
FED in 5 days!! Woohoo!
