What we can learn from Spiderman / Sunday, May 13, 2007 @ 10:55 PM
What we can learn from Spiderman I have been meaning to write about what happened in school lately but I simply find it such a challenge to sit in front of the computer at home to write in here. For that reason, I am so saving up for a new laptop, I have the router so I should be able to go online when I do own it one day. I must congratulate Nurul for getting the position! Hooray! It will be a learning journey but it will not be easy, a lot of hard work but worth it when the school voiced their appreciation of you. Woohoo! I was busy last week doing informal assessments for the boys in the school. Thank goodness, I have seen all the boys on the list but I am pretty sure I will have a new list of boys to see this week. We had a learning support meeting on Friday and the heads were there with the VP. I am wondering why I am there but halfway through the meeting, I was honoured to be there. This is because it shows that the appreciate my presence and they see the importance of me being there. I was seated next to the VP and several times, he turned to me and ask me what do I think? That is cool. I also realise that my VP is a really a cool guy. He listens to everyones views before speaking and even the words he used to speak are as though they were carefully thought. After the trainee teachers packed and settled all the admin issues, it suddenly strucked me that I have no idea who is my reporting officer. I was advised by Catherine that I should talk to the VP himself. So I did. After informing him about the ridiculous schedule and the fact that I have to clock in 8.5 hours everyday, he actually said that he know the MOE person personally and he will email her to ask for a change. It was his decision to send the email and I thought that was really cool too. Since my role and position was different from anyone else in the school, I had to check with him so I was so glad that he was such a cool guy. Anyway, my boys keep asking me what time I am picking them up for classes and honestly I have no idea. It is so heartening to know that they look forward to coming to my classes. I must be doing something right! At the post TP briefing on Saturday, my NSC informed me that my CT and SCM were very impressed with my lessons and that they looked at me as a professional that is of significance. They were actually really impressed that a non reader can now read simple words! Haha! After letting my NSC know the story behind Navin's success, she said that she know the real reason behind why Navin is doing well in my class. It is because it is the only place in the world where he can experience the feeling of success in my classes and that intrinsic motivation is enough for him to look forward to my classes. That is the nicest thing that anyone has said to me this year. I am now in the process of planning the timetable for classes and it is giving me a big headache. I have no idea how to put in everyone in the 2 full days that I am in school. After some issues were brought up in the post TP briefing, I am thankful for having such an awesome NSC. Mrs Toh is such an inspiration and she has brought out that leader in me that has been hiding for some time. I am now entrusted to do what is right, to make changes, to be positive and at the same time, be professional about it. I am glad that the majority is with me on this but I did receive one or two concerns which is ok. I guess to make a big change, one must be accountable. We should learn from the Spiderman 2 movie: With great power, comes great responsibility. I think this is a big responsibility but nevertheless, if this works, it will benefit ALL SNOs, present and future. Hope for the best!
