You can call me Noi! This blog consists of my thoughts. I am just a simple person with BIG dreams! Like the charcoal, hot pressure and extreme heat must be present in order to create a Diamond. I am in the exact same process.

Leaders Are Readers / Thursday, March 23, 2006 @ 10:57 AM
I had the wonderful opportunity to talk about books at Pase meeting on Sunday. I like talking about books as I think I do well in that topic. I used to be more bookworm than I am now. In primary school, we used to have book fairs once a month to ecourage reading habit in kids. We were not so well off back then but my dad always empahsize that even though we were not well off, he would not have doubts giving me money to buy books. Any books. Assesment books, story books. It was a great that he like the fact that I love reading.
I think its only natural that you will be a good writer when you like reading. Do you notice that when you read a book, thousands and thousands of words goes through and into your mind. Only you decide what stays in.
One of my favourites series of books when I was growing up was the bookworm series a nd the R.L Stine series. The bookworm series were so popular back then. The bookworm series of books is about the gang called the 'Bookworm Gang'. Why they are in a gang is because- you guess it right, they loved reading! The gang consist of 10 very different characters. There is Smarty- the smartest one, Simone- the girl who thinks she is better than boys, Porky- the boy who loves to eat a lot, Mimi- the vain girl, Edison- the boy who loves science, Sam Seng- the gangster and most mischievious boy, Fat Ani- the fat girl who loves writing, Kokku- the skinny and tall boy who plays basketball and Louie- the business minded boy. I think they included a few new characters in recent years. What was so interesting about the stories, is how the gang got along even though they were so different from each other. Each book consists of several short stories and behind every story there is a moral lesson to be learned. Maybe thats why kids born in the 80s are better behave than todays kids? I dont know. Compare what we read when we were kids, to what the kids today read. There is a huge difference. In fact even curse words and bad words like 'stupid' were so forbidden to me when I was younger.
The R.L. Stine books were more of a thriller. The stories are usually about jealousy, murder, mystery, supernatural, ghosts etc. The author is so smart as to make the end of each chapter unknown and in suspense so we as readers will want to read on further as soon as we can. I can read for hours. I used to read about 3 to 4 books per day. That was how much I loved the books. Another one of my favourites was this book tittle 'Bad Dreams'. It is about a girl who keeps having bad dreams whenever she sleeps in her room. At first, she thought that the room was haunted but at the end of the story, it was revealed that it was the bed that keep transporting her to meet the previous owner of the room who was apparently murdered.
When I ventured into adulthood, I stopped reading. Poly life was frustrating. I had to read all the scientific encyclopedias for research work..all the chemical elements..its boring. That made me hate reading. However, when I started my own business, 2 years back, it was a necessity to start reading again. This time, what interest me are the positive mental attitude books. Its amazing how much I learn from these books. It has helped me to improve my thought process, my self esteem, self confidence, posture, awareness on my surroundings and above all it helps me open up my mind. Every book, does its own unique ways of uplifting me.
The first few books that I read when I started this business, also one of my pers onal favourites books of all times, is 'Magic of Thinking Big'. This book help the reader to understand our own self and emphazies on the importance of thinking big and the urgent need to excel. It also clearly shows why thinking average will eventually lead to the downfall of any individual. If you have the chance, get this book and buy it. Study it. Make it your own. It will not only help you as a person, but it will also help you deal and understand the people around you better. Furthermore I believe all leaders are readers.
I treat all my books with so much respect and care that I never put my books on the floor. The author of each book has taken the time to write something and got himself/herself published. Its somebodys wisdom so treat it right! I also took the time to wrap each and every single book that I have with plastic so that they will be preserved years after I own and kept them.In fact last Sunday Julie came up to me and said that they have started wrapping all their books thanks to what I said. Thank you. I am happy enough to influence someone in a positive way. I still have the R.L. Stine books even now. Somehow I have this weird idea of my children wanting to read them someday. Hmm I better look for a husband first. :p
I dont think I will ever stop reading now. I can be 8, 18 or 80 and I am still going to love reading.
